Here's a link to the beautiful song.
It seems odd that she is performing with Capleton. Who knows, perhaps there's a chance she can actually educate him. Here are some of the lyrics:
As his friends all jumped in their rides,
Left him in the gutter didnt care if he died,
He was rescued by a car with plates that said 'Gay Pride',
It would have been fatal,
A shot in your head,
They saved your life, though you always said "Chi-chi fi dead!!"
Now do you care, bout the clothes that they wear,
Would you rather if they left you there,
Do you still care what your friends wanna think if they see you hangin out with a queer,
Do you still care, does it still mean a lot now, you're the one who's needin the help,
Do you still care, do you still find it hard to love your neighbour as you love yourself now,
Tell me why cant you accept me as I am,
Just as I am now.
ahhhhhhhh! glad to see you put this up it is a great tune indeed one of the first songs in Jamaica that directly speaks to tolerance.
ReplyDeleteWhy not post the lyrics to some of Capleton's best-known songs? In them, he calls for gays to have our heads hacked off and our bodies burnt. Why not print the truth about how he makes his living? Stirring up hatred. Ignoring that will not make it go away.
ReplyDeleteMy apologies, Mitch, for that comment about ignoring the truth. You deserve better than that.
ReplyDeleteLast February, you posted a very thorough report about Capleton's anti-LGBT murder music. I had forgotten.
It's the same old hate. Again, it's being brought to Eureka by people who don't care who gets hurt as long as they make money off them.
Unless we do something quickly, the Red Fox Tavern will get away with sneaking this creep into and out of our town before we can mount an effective protest.
Maybe we will have to mount a protest after the fact. Since the Red Fox Tavern can't remember it has a moral obligation not to encourage performers who encourage the torture and murder of gay people, maybe we had better find a way to help them remember it.
Damn me! I just followed the link to the "beautiful song."
ReplyDeleteIt is!
Why doesn't Red Fox cancel Capleton and give his time to Tanya Stephens.
Capleton has been coming under pressure as is Sizzla and Vybz Kartel in France before he finally signed the RCA

Dear Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteYes, Tanya Stephen's song is beautiful.
And yes, Capleton's behavior is ugly, violent, and deceptive.
And yes, the Red Fox Tavern has given the finger to those who feel that calling for people's murder is wrong, even when set to music.
I hope someone puts together a protest if the event includes Capleton; if I'm in town, I'll join.
To those who speak of free speech -- protesting Capleton's appearance IS free speech. It does not prevent Capleton from saying or singing one hateful word, but it does make it clear to those who would profit off his hate speech that their profit will not come without consequences.
To those who talk about Capleton's music being "mostly positive," think about how you'd feel about a neo-Nazi band mostly singing love songs to white people, but having "just one or two" lyrics calling for the extermination of blacks. I doubt you'd be comforted.
Red Fox Tavern has a Facebook page where you can find out who will be attending the Capleton concert. People on our side of the issue could check the list. If they find people they know on that list, they could ask them not to attend and explain why they shouldn't attend.
ReplyDeleteThat's a non-violent approach. It should be polite, not abrasive or rude. Strictly Educational.
See, the people on the Red Fox list could have good hearts but maybe they just haven't been paying attention to the news recently. That's probably why they signed up to attend Capleton's murder music concert.
